In September, new car sales in Germany dropped by 7% compared to last year, totaling 208,848 vehicles. This brings the year-to-date sales down 1% to 2,116,074. Compared to September 2019, sales are down 14.6%, and year-to-date figures are 22.8% lower than the same time in 2019. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales, however, showed growth, rising 8.7% to 34,479 units, which is a 16.5% market share compared to 14.1% last year. Despite this, year-to-date BEV sales fell by 28.6%. Volkswagen led with an 18.6% share, despite a 7.4% decline. Mercedes faced a tougher month with a 13% drop. Notably, Skoda had a strong month with a 34.8% increase, while Toyota saw a significant 27.8% rise. Other brands like Volvo and Lexus also posted impressive gains.
The VW Tiguan has made history by reaching the top spot in the German car charts for the first time, thanks to a 13% increase driven by its new generation. This achievement is surprising, considering it had ranked #2 a whopping 39 times since April 2014 but never clinched the top position. Meanwhile, the VW Golf has dropped to #2 after a significant 28.1% decline, although it still holds the year-to-date lead. The Mini lineup has risen seven spots to #3 with a 16% increase, while the Opel Astra has seen a remarkable jump of 72.4%, landing at #4.
The former leader, the VW T-Roc, has slipped to #5, just above the Skoda Octavia, which grew by 10.3%, and the Opel Corsa, down 36%. Notable mentions include the BMW X1, climbing 44.6% to #8, and the Skoda Enyaq, which soared 199.6% to #9. The VW ID.7 has also made waves, skyrocketing 8,522.6% year-on-year to debut in the Top 20 at #16, up from its previous best of #47 just last month. This signals a positive trend for the ID series!
